Type Locality and Naming

The naming section is located at Changjia Village in the upper reaches of the Zhijia Gully, Lantian County, Shaanxi. Named by Jia Lanpo in 1966.


Lithology and Thickness

Mainly a sequence of alternating beds of purplish red mudstone, sandy mudstone and fine sandstone, the base of which is conglomerate. The total thickness exceeds 160 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The horizon at the base overlaps and directly rests on pre-Sinian quartzite. Regionally, the next older unit is the Fangou Fm (middle Paleocene)

Upper contact

There is an erosion surface between the top and the overlying Middle Eocene Bailuyuan Fm, showing a disconformable contact

Regional extent

This formation is mainly distributed at the Zhijia Gully, Lantian County, and at Jijiawan in the upper reaches of the Honghe River near Lintong.

Fossils

The fossil mammals found in the formation include Arctotitan honghoensis cf., Deperetella sp. and Breviodon sp.


Age 

The age of this formation was suggested to be Eocene in the past, but now restricted it to Middle Eocene.
